Four Chaplains Day

Four Chaplains Day commemorates the deaths of Rev. George L. Fox, Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Rev. Clark V. Poling and Father John P. Washington.

In an act of consummate bravery and dedication to their calling, the four Navy Chaplains refused rescue and stood their ground attending the injured and dying as the transport USAT Dorchester sank after being attacked this day in 1943.

The Dorchester, a converted passenger liner chartered by the military to transport troops to Greenland, was torpedoed by a German sub and sank in 27 minutes. Of the 902 personnel on board, 672 perished.
