History's Happenings for July 6
Revolutionary War Declared
On this date in 1775, the Second Continental Congress, meeting to address the issue of war with Britain after the undeclared battles of Lexington, Concord, Bunker Hill and Fort Ticonderoga, issued a paper entitled Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms. This was an explanation to a generally doubting public as to why the Colonies now found themselves at war with their mother country. It was also the formal declaration to Britain that a state of war existed between us.
