Liberty Bell Day commemorates the official ringing of the famous bell, on July 8, 1776, following the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell was originally cast in Philadelphia in 1753, following two previous unsuccessful attempts at making the casting. It was hung in the tower of Independence Hall in Philadelphia on June 7, 1753. When the British threatened Philadelphia in 1777, the bell was removed to prevent its capture, but returned in 1778 and rung on every July 4th and major state occasions thereafter. Its peal was finally silenced when it received its well-known crack while purportedly tolling the death of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall in July, 1835. The inscription on the bell reads "Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land unto All the Inhabitants Thereof. Leviticus XXV:X."
