First Streetside Letter Boxes Appear
1858

Prior to August 8, 1858, anyone with a letter to mail had to trot down to the local post office ... still a relative novelty itself. But on this day, the first of the all-too-familiar streetside letter boxes appeared in Boston, MA. The idea quickly caught on and spread to other cities in the U.S.

It was five years later, in 1863, that the idea of also delivering mail free of charge to homes and businesses became reality in some large cities. In 1865 it became established practice in all cities with populations over 50,000. This limit was steadily reduced to 20,000 in 1873, and 10,000 in 1887. In 1896, delivery to rural areas was tried in some places and, like the letterbox idea in 1858, caught on and quickly became the rule across the nation.
