At the instigation of Alexander Hamilton, the service began with ten boats charged with the collection of marine revenue. It was later renamed the Revenue Cutter Service and, in 1915, was combined with the Lifesaving Service to become the United States Coast Guard. While a part of the Treasury Department during peacetime, in war the Coast Guard becomes subordinate to the U.S. Navy and serves a critical military function as guardian of our shores.
