Forefathers Day

Forefathers Day marks the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, MA, in 1620.

First Day of Winter

The winter solstice, marking the first official day of winter -- though we normally have felt its pangs before now -- marks the point at which the sun is at its southernmost point in the sky, producing our shortest day and longest night in the northern hemisphere. On this day, usually between December 20th and 22nd, the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, which runs through Paraguay and southern Brazil at latitude 20°27' south.

In the southern hemisphere, this is the first day of summer.
