Today marks the point at which — at last estimate, anyway — the average American has finally earned enough income to pay his or her federal, state and local taxes. This calculation can vary -- usually growing later -- depending upon who is doing the calculating. That's one third of a year, or approximately the same proportion of your labor that the average medieval serf owed to his liege lord. Prior to the Clinton administration, Tax Freedom Day fell about two weeks earlier, representing approximately 11% less in total tax demand. The last such major change occured during the (Franklin) Roosevelt administration, when tax freedom day advanced over one month. Taxes are a necessity in a civilized nation. Excessive taxation coupled to wasteful, non-productive and self-promoting government spending is abhorent to a free society.
