Modern Department of Defense Formed
1949

On this date in 1949, the current Department of Defense was created from the sloppily-named National Military Establishment itself created from the former War Department by the National Security Act of 1947 with James G. Forrestal its first Secretary.

Forrestal had been Secretary of the Navy, a separate executive position within the government from 1798 until the 1947 reorganization, which joined it with the other services.
